What is ISO?
ISO is the International Organization for Standardization which is based in Switzerland. They are the organization that drafts and publishes internationally recognised standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22000, ISO 50001, etc.
What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is an internationally recognized standard for a Quality Management System which focuses on meeting customer needs & exceeding their expectations.
What is the difference between ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001?
ISO 9001 is the standard for the Quality Management System where the focus is on striving to meet & exceed customer requirements.
ISO 14001 is the standard for the Environmental Management System where the focus is on managing the operation’s interaction with the environment with the aim of preventing pollution.
ISO 45001 is the standard for the Occupational Health & Safety Management System where the focus is on managing the risks of the operation with aim of preventing work related injuries and ill health.
What does it mean to have ISO 9001 certificate?
It means your company has implemented a Quality Management System that has been audited & found to be compliant with the requirements laid out in the ISO 9001 standard.
Is it necessary to have ISO 9001?
It depends on your business objectives. ISO 9001 is a useful business strategy. It helps the business manage the quality of its products or services effectively. It also makes your (potential) customers have confidence in your business that their needs will be met. Many companies use it as a strategy to unlock business opportunities as some customers only want to deal with companies that have achieved ISO 9001 certification.
But isn't ISO 9001 for big companies?
Not really. Any company of any size can implement a Quality Management System & request a Certification Body for a certification audit.
Do you issue ISO certificates?
No. We are only a consulting firm. We assist in implementing ISO Management Systems & assist our clients to be fully ready to undergo a certification audit. Certification audit is a separate process which is carried out by an accredited Certification Body, after which, if successful, ISO certificate is then granted by the same Certification Body.
Can I contact ISO offices to request ISO 9001 certification?
No. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) doesn't get involved in certification process of companies. They only draft & publish the various ISO family of standards. Certification is carried out by a separate, independent & accredited Certification Body (CB).
What is the process of getting ISO 9001 certificate?
Implement the Quality Management System according to the ISO 9001 standard. Once the system is in place schedule a certification audit with a Certification Body. The Certification Body will then come audit your Quality Management System which usually takes about 2-3 days (longer if it's a big company) and if there are no major findings raised during the audit then you get issued with an ISO 9001 certificate.
How long does it take from implementation to certification?
It can take anything from 2-6 months or even longer for big companies. There really is no one size fits all. It depends on the size of the company & the nature & complexity of the business.
